CLEVELAND - Throughout the month of September, FOX 8 News has been celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month. The celebration continued Wednesday morning as FOX 8’s Kenny Crumpton spent a morning with local artist Will Sanchez.
He is the founder of La Cosecha Galeria, which means the Harvest Gallery. Sanchez says it’s the first gallery owned and operated by Hispanics in the city of Cleveland. READ MORE....

CLEVELAND - Artist Will Sanchez grew up in the La Villa Hispana neighborhood. But it wasn’t until he was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2003 for trying to rob a convenience store at 5404 Storer Ave. that he discovered his love and talent for art—and re-embraced his childhood community.
In 2018, he opened La Cosecha Gallery (the Harvest Gallery) in the exact same location he tried to rob 15 years earlier. READ MORE....

This convening -hosted by the Joyce Foundation's Culture Program and co-sponsored by the Gund Foundation- is free and open to those actively working or deeply interested in the role of the arts in fostering and preserving equitable communities, neighborhood health and resilience, economic mobility, spatial justice, memory and heritage, and collective civic imagination, the foundation details. CLEVELAND - City governments and community organizations often turn to local artists to brighten-up abandoned neighborhood walls. Eyesores are beautified and artists get a chance to earn some money. But, arts advocates argue that artists offer much more than decoration to area neighborhoods.
A couple of years ago, Cleveland artist Will Sanchez bought an abandoned convenience store at West 54th Street and Storer Avenue, in the heart of the city’s Latino community. He's transforming it into an art gallery. Sanchez is part of a growing movement of artists who are using their skills to promote civic change. That's the topic of a national conference coming to town this week, The Artist as Problem Solver II: Building the Capacity of Artists & Cultural Workers as Civic Leaders, sponsored by the Chicago-based Joyce Foundation. CLEVELAND - The 46-year-old artist bought the former space that he once tried to rob and turned it into La Cosecha Galeria.
Why he’s interesting: Sanchez opened La Cosecha Galeria this summer in the Stockyard neighborhood. But the origins of the gallery began in 2004 when Sanchez walked into the small convenience store that previously occupied the space, ready to rob its husband-and-wife owners. But once inside, he couldn’t go through with it. After getting out of jail, he worked on his art, made a name for himself and opened Gallery 1299 on West Ninth Street. When he saw the convenience store space available in 2016, he knew he just had to buy it. READ MORE....

CLEVELAND - On Saturday, artist Will Sanchez will open his new art gallery on the west side of Cleveland.
It is in the same building he tried to rob at gunpoint 14 years ago.
“I sort of just kept pushing, kept believing,” Sanchez said, as he put the final touches on his gallery and paintings Friday morning.
The building sat vacant on the corner of West 54th Street and Storer Avenue in Cleveland for years. It used to be home to a mom-and-pop corner store, one that Sanchez used to frequent for cigarettes. Then, one day in 2004, he came in for much more. READ MORE....
